‘ion’ and ‘ing’

Look at these two words:

correction
correcting

We can use them both as nouns, but their meaning and the way we use them differs slightly.

The ‘ing’ form usually refers to the activity taking place, whereas the ‘ion’ form usually talks about the result of an activity. Look at the following sentences:

We specialise in correcting documents. (The activity of making documents correct.)
We specialise in the correction of documents. (The result of making documents correct – the correct document itself.)

Please notice that with the ‘ion’ form, it is common to use ‘the’ just before it, and ‘of’ just after it.
